This week's post will be covering the Democrats and Republicans viewpoints on the topic of gun control. This has always been a difficult and dividing topic in our country, and it will most likely continue to be one.
Once again,Republicans believe in smaller government with fewer regulations,This political posture extends to their opinions on the rights of Americans to own firearms. They believe they have the right to own, carry, and use guns. They believe it a right which was antedated in the Constitution and confirmed by the second amendment. The NRA believes, "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." And Republicans generally hold the same opinion. They advocate "stand your ground laws" that encouraged people to use guns to settle arguments. They also seek for both open-carry and concealed-carry laws on a "shall issue" basis, which means the government presumes that you should get the license unless they can prove you fall into the certain categories of offenders.Republicans also believe in the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. They also advocate for increased public hunting land and hunting/safety clinics for adults and children. They are usually in opposition to federal licensing of law-abiding gun owners and national registration as a violation of the second amendment and invasion of privacy.
Democrats recognize the American tradition of bearing arms and the preservation of the second amendment. But they also believe that the right to bear arms is subject to reasonable regulation. They wish to see stricter gun regulation, especially on banning of assault weapons and expanding background checks. They also believe in ending the sale of high-capacity magazines and closing loopholes to make it harder for people convicted of domestic abuse or stalking, from owning a gun. They have issued laws such as Brady's Law of 1993 which instituted mandatory federal background checks in the U.S.As well as the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which prohibited the sale of assault rifles and certain semi-automatic machine guns to U.S. citizens.Democrats usually believe that crime and homicide will severely mitigate if more stringent gun laws were enforced
Each side have been battling with the issue of gun control for the past few years, and it is one of the main topics discussed in the current political debates. One side is advocating for less government control and wanting the protection of rights, while the other side is advocating for increased gun laws and regulations, while the opinions of the U.S. citizens are greatly divided on the matter as well.
I can connect to this post due to the fact that I just wrote a post about gun violence in the United States. I due believe that this issue is a very controversial one and has the country divided. The gun violence in our country needs to stop at the same time I understand how people want to defend themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very controversial topic. It is a hard issue for many people to understand since firearm ownership is somewhat misunderstood.
ReplyDeleteGuns are a hot topic this week. I liked your post it was interesting. However, it seemed a bit as though you were trying to make Republicans seem like the bad guy and Democrats like the good guy while not outright saying it. Also, I have never heard of the idea of standing one's guard and settling arguments with guns as the preferred interest. I'd like to look into this more.
